My life has been filled with adventures, but I'm about to embark on my life's Gran Aventura. Since this is an introduction for some of you, I'll give you a little run down about me. My name is Patrick; I'm 34 years, I have blond hair and blue eyes, I'm 5'6" (1.68 m), I weigh 140 lbs (65.5 kg), and I speak English with passable Spanish as well.
I was born and raised in New York state and as a child I went on a lot of weekend adventures and summer vacations all over the north-east United States. My grandmother, who I called "Nana", and I would just jump in the car and drive somewhere. We'd visit restaurants, look-out spots, museums, and just go for a ride. I was also lucky enough to go on some pretty cool vacations with Nana and or my mother as well: Quebec; Hershey, Pennsylvania; Plymouth, Massachusetts; Orlando, Florida and others.
When I was older I was able to take a few vacations myself. I visited Portugal, Spain, Morocco, England, Wales and Ireland before I graduated High School. Later in my life I returned to London, England for two weeks and I was lucky enough to live and work in Costa Rica for the winter season in 2002 and again in 2003. I've also lived in Florida for most of the last 16 years and I have visited a lot of great cities throughout the USA as well, such as New York City, Las Vegas, Miami and Washington, DC.
Among those travels have been a life that can be considered normal and run-of-the-mill. I have for the last 20 years worked in various aspects of food service, hospitality and customer service. My life has been one of trying to please others and, for the most part, I am good at it. However, it is tiring. Over the last two decades I have noticed that people (particularly, people of the USA) have an irrational feeling of entitlement, short-sighted views of the world and little understanding when it comes to things different than everyday life in this country.
Well, I'm tired of all that. The greatest joys I have received in traveling have been learning about a culture and history of a place and then meeting the people that embody those traditions. I love the fact that people have different experiences and points-of-view that are different from my own, even if I don't always agree. I love discovering why they feel and think the way they do.
So, I am starting what I call my Gran Aventura!
My plan for the next six months (and possibly longer) is to live abroad. Many countries allow a US citizen to visit their country for up to 90 days with only a valid US Passport and without a visa. It is my plan to take a quick weekend vacation to Bogotá, Colombia and then live for 3 months in Quito, Ecuador while I visit the rest of this beautiful country. After that, I have arranged to fly to Lima, Peru where I will spend the next three months. Currently, I have no plans formed beyond that, but I'm sure I will think of something.
I have been thinking of doing something like this for the last three years, but I never fully planned it out, just wishful thinking. However, last year I took an online program to receive my TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) Diploma. With this I hope to earn a living while abroad a few months at a time. In addition, I have saved a few thousand dollars to help me if I cannot find a way to supplement my income. Once I did that, I gave focus to this plan.
I want to live in an apartment in Quito/Lima as a regular person. I want to cook my own meals, work a little bit, make friends and experience life as a local rather than as a tourist. Of course, I want to explore the country as well, so there will be plenty of tourist photo opportunities.

Mi vida se llena de aventuras, pero estoy a punto de embarcarse en la Gran Aventura de mi vida. Dado que esta es una introducción a algunos de ustedes, me voy a dar un poco descuidado de mí. Mi nombre es Patrick, tengo 34 años, tengo el pelo rubio y ojos azules, estoy 5'6 "(1,68 m), peso 140 libras (65,5 kg), y hablar Inglés con el español pasable también.
Nací y fui criado en Nueva York y el estado de niño fui a un montón de aventuras de fin de semana y las vacaciones de verano en todo el noreste de Estados Unidos. Mi abuela, que he llamado "Nana", y yo sólo ir en el coche y conducir en alguna parte. Nos visitan los restaurantes, puntos de observación museos, y sólo tiene que ir a dar un paseo. También estaba la suerte de ir en unas vacaciones muy bien con Nana y ni a mi madre, así: Quebec; Hershey, Pennsylvania; Plymouth, Massachusetts; Orlando, Florida y otros.
Cuando yo era más viejo que era capaz de tomar de unas vacaciones a mí mismo. He visitado Portugal, España, Marruecos, Inglaterra, Gales e Irlanda antes de que se graduó de secundaria. Más adelante en mi vida he vuelto a Londres por dos semanas y tuve la suerte de vivir y trabajar en Costa Rica para la temporada de invierno en 2002 y nuevamente en 2003. También he vivido en Florida durante la mayor parte de los últimos 16 años y he visitado muchas de las grandes ciudades a lo largo de los EE.UU., así como Nueva York, Las Vegas, Miami y Washington, DC.
Entre los viajes han sido una vida que puede ser considerado normal. Que tengo para los últimos 20 años trabajó en diversos aspectos del servicio de comida, la hospitalidad y servicio al cliente. Mi vida ha sido uno de tratar de complacer a los demás y, en su mayor parte, estoy bien. Sin embargo, es agotador. Durante las últimas dos décadas, he notado que la gente (sobre todo, la gente de los EE.UU.) tienen un sentimiento irracional de derecho, miope visión del mundo y la poca comprensión cuando se trata de cosas diferentes de la vida cotidiana en este país.
Bueno, estoy cansado de todo eso. Las mayores alegrías que he recibido en viajes han estado aprendiendo sobre la cultura y la historia de un lugar y conocer a las personas que encarnan las tradiciones. Me encanta el hecho de que las personas tienen diferentes experiencias y puntos de vista que son diferentes de las mías, aunque no siempre están de acuerdo. Me encanta descubrir por qué se sienten y piensan como lo hacen.
Por lo tanto, estoy empezando lo que yo llamo mi Gran Aventura!
Mi plan para los próximos seis meses (y posiblemente más tiempo) es vivir en el extranjero. Muchos países permiten que un ciudadano de los EE.UU. para visitar a su país durante un máximo de 90 días con sólo un pasaporte válido de EE.UU. y sin necesidad de visado. Es mi plan para tomar unas vacaciones de fin de semana a Bogotá, Colombia, y luego vivir durante 3 meses en Quito, Ecuador, mientras que visite el resto de este hermoso país. Después de eso, he dispuesto para volar a Lima, Perú, donde voy a pasar los próximos tres meses. En la actualidad, no tengo ningún plan formado más allá de eso, pero estoy seguro que voy a pensar en algo.
He estado pensando en hacer algo como esto durante los últimos tres años, pero nunca se lo planeado, sólo una ilusión. Sin embargo, el año pasado tuvo un programa en línea para recibir mi TEFL (Enseñanza del Inglés como Lengua Extranjera) Diploma.Con esto espero que ganarse la vida en el extranjero unos meses a la vez. Además, he ahorrado unos cuantos miles de dólares para que me ayude si no puedo encontrar una manera de complementar mis ingresos. Una vez que lo hice, le di a la selección a este plan.
Quiero vivir en un apartamento en Quito / Lima como una persona normal. Quiero cocinar mi propia comida, trabajar un poco, hacer amigos y experimentar la vida como un local más que como un turista. Por supuesto, quiero explorar el país, así que habrá un montón de oportunidades de fotos turísticas.
